OMG! Blow Your Mind Alert Public Service Annoucement:

So I’ve got this thing for certain types of world music. Not the Lion King kinda stuff either…But a rare, darker, more creative breed. In walks Dakha Brakha. And what can I say, their music commenced to kicking me in the ass like right off the bat.

Here I am listening to my Russian internet radio station on lastfm.com, trolling for gems whilst working on other things. Out of the magnificent void struts this band that just about set my ears on fire, in a good way. Good luck finding their c.d. to purchase locally though. This is digging into the Ukrainian obscurra according to iTunes (stumped it with this band as is usually the disappointing case when I go hunting for really good music that is not American). Stumped Amazon too. The really good news….I mean the really really super sweet news that makes it A OK that you won’t find their c.d. at your local c.d. shop or even via Amazon or iTunes is this…This is the truly awesome thing about living in the fabulous future times we live in… You can listen to the whole album via their website (http://www.dax.com.ua/en/dahabraha or go to http://dakhabrakha.com.ua/)…and they encourage you to download the tracks….fo free! Yeah, that’s when I almost fell out of my chair…cause this stuff is so good that getting it for free was almost more than my bat-lightning heart could take.

Best way I can describe this music: It will give you chills, it sets the mood, makes you wanna throw some logs on the fireplace and sit in the dark watching the flames. The music is like witchcraft and it will take you somewhere. It’s the dark woods and howling wolves. It’s beautiful…all white snow and anticipation with a light dusting of dread. Goddamn magical.

Like you, I was completely blown away by Dakhabrakha when I first heard them. I’ve since bought their two studio albums directly from the Ukraine over the internet, and I probably spend as much time listening to them as the entire rest of my music collection. They’ve also got some really good stuff on youtube – I’m listening to ‘Specially for you’ as I type.

Yup. I listen to them almost every day. I keep waiting for people in the household to say “Enough Already!”…But seems the band is casting an almighty spell on the whole family. One day I will see them live even it means hopping a plane to the Ukraine. Guess I better start learning the Russian language and saving up for a chilly vacation.
